29181Anderton LiftAnderton Lift (River Weaver)Anderton Lift (Trent and Mersey)03 January 202517 September 2027Update : August 12 2026, 8:30 AM
We understand how much the Anderton Boat Lift means to boaters, visitors and the community. We're focussed on finding a solution to get the lift operational again while we look to secure the larger investment for its long-term future. We are still aiming to reopen one caisson in May 2027, as planned.

Since the closure of the lift, the Trust has carried out extensive work to identify the best way to repair and modify the caisson gate lifting mechanisms to prevent similar failures happening again. Several options were considered and in Autumn 2025, after the investigation into the cause of failure had been completed, the detailed engineering design began. The design considered a solution that would remove the need for cables and provide a robust and reliable lifting mechanism. However, as the designs have progressed, the complexity of doing this on such a historic structure has led to the scope, and the forecast cost, increasing significantly – to the point where that option is currently neither practical nor affordable. Consequently, we have needed to consider an alternative solution, based more closely on the existing cable system, to get the lift open and operational for boaters and all those who visit. The solution needs to be safe, legally compliant and in keeping with the historic status of the structure.

We believe we have now found a proposal which requires testing. The next step is for specialist engineers who are familiar with these lifting systems to design and replace the components required before undertaking a series of tests to prove that the solution is safe and viable. The process will also confirm what other works are necessary prior to the lift re-opening for boat use.

Customers and visitors will be able to see this activity being undertaken at the lift this Autumn as we replace elements of the lifting systems and begin testing procedures. We expect to know by December 2026 what further work is required in the new year to reopen the lift by May 2027. We will keep everyone updated through this process as to whether the tests are successful and confirm the forecast opening date.

The Trust will hold an open day at Anderton in the Autumn. We'll publish the date once we have the testing programme and at the most helpful point to share progress. The Trust is aware of how frustrating the closure of the lift has been to boaters and that reopening the lift has seemed to be straightforward to many outside of the project team. The open day will provide an opportunity to share more about the options that have been explored and the constraints we have had to work within to get the lift open. It will also be an opportunity to hear about how we approach a secure future for the boat lift in the longer term. Our priority remains to get the lift operating again for boats. We're sorry for the time it has taken to get to this point – and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and support while we work towards a solution and the reopening of the lift.

32257Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation)Zouch Lock No 55Zouch Lock No 5520 August 202617 September 2027Update : August 27 2026, 12:33 PM
Unfortunately, the work recently carried out to plank and board the lock gates has not been successful. The lock cannot currently be operated safely because the chamber is not equalising correctly. This creates excessive pressure on the gates and balance beams during operation, and as a result the lock remains chained off and closed to navigation.

A full lock dewatering operation is now required so that colleagues can carry out further investigations and identify the underlying cause of the problem.

Due to the lock's location and its proximity to the River Soar, the site set-up needed to undertake this work safely is particularly complex. The current review date shown on this notice reflects our best estimate of when the lock may be able to reopen based on the information available today.

We recognise that this continued uncertainty makes it difficult for customers to plan journeys with confidence. We will continue to review progress and update this notice with further information as soon as it becomes available.

30690Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation)Cossington Lock No 48Cossington Lock No 4807 September 202623 October 2026We're carrying out essential improvements at Cossington Lock 48, including the replacement of the top and bottom lock gates. To complete this work safely, a stoppage will be in place from 7th September to 23rd October 2026.

Previous stoppages on the River Soar have been significantly affected by flooding, leading to unavoidable delays. These dates have been carefully selected to minimise the risk of further disruption from adverse weather and to help ensure the works can be completed efficiently.

Looking ahead, we're committed to providing longer advance notice for river stoppages, especially during the spring and summer months. As we continue to share our multi‑year programme, customers will receive greater forward visibility to help with planning and navigation.

We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience while we complete these essential works.

31255Huddersfield Narrow CanalStanley Dawson Lock No 1EBooth Lock No 31E15 June 202617 September 2027Works taking place at Slaithwaite Reservoir have necessitated a drawdown of reservoir levels that has been ongoing for several months. With recent warm, dry weather and an increase in boat movement on the canal, we have insufficient water resources to maintain navigation for the long term on the lower section of the canal.

From Monday 15th June 2026 navigation between Lock 1E and Lock 31E will close with these locks being padlocked closed.

Whilst the closure is in effect passage will only be possible between Standedge Tunnel and Lock 31E. Anyone looking to transit through Standedge Tunnel from Diggle in the Northwest will only be permitted to do so with a return tunnel booking. Boats will be able to turn in the winding hole above Lock 31E.

Should levels in Slaithwaite Reservoir improve enough to provide an opportunity to open a passage window then details of this will be communicated by way of an update to this notice.

Marple Lock Flight continues to operate under restrictions to help manage available water resources.

The lock times are as follows:

Marple Lock Flight – Thursdays only, from 9 am to 1 pm

All boats must have exited the flight by 4 pm.

These operating times are intended to provide boaters with greater certainty when planning their journeys, while allowing our teams to carefully manage water resources across the network.

To help with reduced water flow from the reservoirs, access from third party land owners to gain access to site has been agreed and repair works to the collapsed culvert have commenced on the Combs Reservoir feeder, which will help improve water supply and support water levels as the works progress.

Our teams continue to monitor water resources closely and are working to address the issues affecting water supply. Where conditions improve, we will review the current operating times and make adjustments where possible.

Please note that operating times remain under review and may change as conditions develop.

Please also be aware that a navigation closure has been published for the Bosley Flight on the Macclesfield Canal further details can be found
here.

A further update will be provided on or before Monday, 5 October.

We wanted to provide a brief update regarding the current closure.

We continue to closely monitor water levels, weather forecasts and the wider drought conditions that are affecting the waterway.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing impact of the drought and continued low water levels, we are not currently in a position to reopen. Protecting the remaining water resources and maintaining the integrity of the navigation remain our priorities while these conditions persist.

We appreciate that this closure may be disappointing and we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging period.

We will continue to keep the situation under regular review and will update this notice as soon as there is any significant change or further information to share.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

32146Oxford Canal (Southern Section - Main Line)Aynho Weir Lock No 33Aynho Weir Lock No 3317 August 202602 October 2026Lock 33 is being closed due to drought conditions, whilst this is in place we will be completely a 2027 stoppage to change both top and bottom lock gates and stop plank groves.

There will be review points throughout the works if conditions change and they canal is to re-open. this currently looks like the following
• Works at Lock 33 are expected to commence during the week commencing 17th August.
• Replacement of the top gates is expected to be completed during the week commencing 31st August.
• At that point, the project team will review progress on site, alongside prevailing water levels, weather conditions and any rainfall received across the catchment, to determine whether any navigation passage opportunity can be safely provided.
• Following repositioning of the crane boat, works will begin on the bottom gates, with completion currently anticipated by 25 September.
• This will be followed by approximately four days of demobilisation and making the site safe.
• Subject to conditions and successful completion of the works, a planned navigation passage window is currently expected between 2 and 4 October.

As with all works taking place during the current drought conditions, the programme will be kept under constant review. We are holding regular internal meetings to monitor progress, water resource conditions and navigation impacts, and we will continue to assess opportunities to minimise disruption wherever possible.

We wanted to provide this update as early as possible given the interest many of you have shown in the planned works and the feedback you previously shared.

Your comments played an important role in helping us understand the potential business impacts of a future planned closure, and we are grateful for the constructive engagement we have received throughout.

We will continue to keep you informed as the works progress and will issue further updates should any aspect of the programme change.

Work has temporarily stopped on the reconstruction of the canal embankment due to unforeseen wet areas of material at the south (New Mills Lift Bridge) end of the works. The wet areas are preventing the imported granular material from being adequately compacted. The existing dams at the south end of the works are to be moved further back in an attempt to reduce water ingress, believed to possibly be infiltrating from the adjacent canal. The re-location of the dams will prevent access to and from the Whitchurch Arm. Additional remedial work is planned to improve the ground using soil stabilisation techniques to allow works to recommence.

32110Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Canal - Main Line)Swanley Lock No 6Baddiley Lock No 906 August 202617 September 2027Update : September 4 2026, 10:39 AM
From our last update, further detailed surveys and assessments of the damaged canal embankment, towpath and culvert are continuing. Some of these surveys and investigations cannot be completed until the fallen tree at the site has been removed, and this is planned to be removed next week and is expected to take several days to complete.

The results of these surveys will enable our engineers to determine the safest and most effective long-term repair method, while helping us restore navigation as quickly as possible.

Our teams have been working during the recent heavy rainfall, ensuring the dam remains secure and water levels continue to be stable. Normal water flows are being maintained, and Hurleston Reservoir and is operating as usual. However, navigation remains closed as it remains unsafe to pass due to significant silting and the dam structure in the canal.

Until the survey findings have been fully analysed and a method of repair has been agreed, we are unable to confirm definitive timescales for the works. As previously advised, we expect the permanent repairs to take months rather than weeks to complete. We hope to be able to provide a more detailed timeframe in the next few weeks.

The sections of canal that remain open and unaffected by the closure are from Llangollen Basin to Bridge 31A (Whitchurch By-Pass Bridge), and from Grindley Brook locks, onwards to Swanley.

We recognise the disruption this closure is causing and would like to thank customers for their continued patience and understanding while we work towards a safe and lasting repair.

If you require support or would like to discuss your individual circumstances, please contact our North West Customer Support Team on 0303 040 4040, and we will do our best to help.

We will provide a further update on or before Friday 18 September.

32027Gloucester and Sharpness CanalLow Level Swing BridgeGloucester Dock Lock31 July 202617 September 2027Please be advised that the River Severn is running low and slow, carrying substantial amounts of silt.

To help reduce the amount of silt having to be pumped into Gloucester dock we will apply the following restrictions:

Sharpness Port:
The lock will be closed to leisure craft except where they can share with commercial shipping movements, subject to safety considerations and lock availability.
Customers must check the availability of these additional lockage's with Sharpness Pier Head. Customers should note that commercial sailings are not regular and subject to late change and update. The availability of these additional lockage's may be limited.

Gloucester Lock:
The lock will be restricted to all craft.
Locking out (Gloucester dock northwards onto River Severn) will be at 8am, 10am, 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm.
Incoming traffic from the river will be on alternate hours from 9am until 5pm.

The Lock Keeper will look to limit the impact on customers wherever practical and where safety considerations require, such as tides, additional lockage's may be allowed or postponed.
We ask customers to be patient and thank everyone for their cooperation during this time of prolonged hot dry weather.

Upper Lode Lock:
Boats travelling to Gloucester will be advised not to continue with their journey to Gloucester if they leave Upper Lode after 4pm.

We understand the concerns customers may have with the implementation of these measures but must advise that further restrictions may be required should flows in the River Severn continue to fall.

Should it be necessary to continue to escalate water management measures over the course of the summer, we will work to ensure the best balance of measures are implemented.

These measures will next be reviewed on 6th August or sooner should the water resource position of the River Severn improve.

Please contact Gloucester Lock on 01452 310832 for information on restrictions at Gloucester Lock or for Sharpness Lock bookings & restrictions Sharpness Pier Head on 01453 511968.

32556Rochdale Canal (Main Line)Sowerby Bridge Lock No 1Callis Lock No 1326 March 202617 September 2027Update : September 7 2026, 3:20 PM
Following reflection on last summer and the significant water scarcity experienced on the Rochdale Canal, we will be introducing an operational window for the navigation Locks 1–13.
This change is being implemented to provide greater certainty for boaters on when navigation will be available and to help us keep the canal open for as long as possible through the summer months.
By managing lock operation within defined time periods, we can use water more efficiently and economically, reducing unnecessary losses and better protecting water levels during prolonged dry weather.
Our aim is to balance the needs of navigation with the realities of limited water resources, while continuing to support safe and reliable passage wherever possible.
Further details on the operational window, including times and any updates, will be shared on our website and through our usual customer communications.

Tuel Lane Lock is available for passage on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

The opening hours are:
Mondays and Fridays 0800-1600 no prior booking required. Last entry at 1500 hrs
Sundays 1000-1500 no prior booking required. Last entry at 1400 hrs.

No booking needed.

Hebden Bridge Locks 7 to 11 – passage available 10am to 6pm daily with last entry to all areas at 4pm. Outside of these times all these locks will be locked off.
Padlocks will start to be applied on Monday 17th August from 4pm, starting at lock 11 and working down to lock 7. Lock up completion time will be approximately complete by 6pm taking about 2 hours.
They will then be removed from Tuesday 18th August starting at lock 7 and working towards lock 11, completed by 10am approximately.
Locks will then be applied in this order from 4pm close down procedure on a night and then removed by 10am in the morning on a daily basis until further notice.

32635Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation (Sheffield Canal)Tinsley Lock No 3Tinsley Bottom Lock No 1214 September 202617 September 2027Following a manual handling and operational assessment of the Tinsley Lock Flight, a number of lock gates have been identified as requiring further engineering investigation and improvement.

The assessment included load testing of selected lock gates and identified several locations where the forces required to operate the gates were above acceptable operating limits.

We have considered whether temporary operating arrangements could be introduced to allow assisted passage to continue. However, at this stage we are unable to provide suitable temporary operating guidance that would allow the affected locks to be operated safely.

The Tinsley Lock Flight from Lock 3 to Holmes Lock will therefore remain closed to navigation.

Passage to/from Sheffield to/from moorings sited at Tinsley Marina can still be facilitated following normal booking procedures.
Our engineers will be carrying out further load testing and investigation of the affected gates, and will use the results to formulate a plan for the work required.

We appreciate that this closure will cause disruption and apologise for the inconvenience. We will provide a further update on Monday 21st September.

32018Coventry Canal (Main Line - Hawkesbury to Fazeley)Atherstone Top Lock No 1Atherstone Bottom Lock No 1104 August 202617 September 2027Update : September 8 2026, 10:35 AM
While water levels on the Coventry Canal around Atherstone may appear plentiful, the challenge is not simply the amount of water in the canal itself but having enough water available to operate the locks safely and sustainably.

The lock flight at Atherstone requires around 20 megalitres of water each day to operate. The main water supplies for the Coventry and Ashby canals come from the River Swift near Rugby and the Griff Feeder in Nuneaton. At present, neither source is providing the volume of water needed to support the reopening of the locks.

Our teams monitor water levels and river flows daily. Once the water supply from these sources is consistently high enough to support lock operations, the restrictions will be lifted, and the locks will reopen to boating.

We appreciate that, to many boaters, the canal may look as though it has plenty of water. However, managing a canal network relies on a reliable and sustainable supply to replace the water used each time a lock operates.

We would like to thank boaters for their patience and understanding while we continue to monitor conditions and work towards reopening the navigation as soon as possible.

Since our last update, it has been identified that additional temporary works are required due to ground conditions being too soft to safely support the scaffolding.

Our contractors are currently assessing available options and will undertake further ground testing this week to determine the most appropriate temporary works solution. Repair works will remain on hold until a safe and suitable plan has been agreed.

In the meantime, the current navigation restrictions will remain in place until further notice. The canal will be closed to navigation daily between 6:00pm and 6:00am, during which time vessels will not be permitted to pass beneath the bridge.

Between 6:00am and 6:00pm, navigation will remain open. To ensure safe passage, all boaters must make themselves known to the site operative stationed at the bridge before proceeding. The operative will temporarily stop traffic crossing the bridge to allow vessels to pass safely beneath.

A further update will be provided on or before Wednesday 23 September.

Recent rainfall has not improved conditions enough to allow the Northampton Arm to fully reopen. However, having reviewed the current situation, we believe that a limited period of navigation can be accommodated without having a significant impact on water resources elsewhere on the Grand Union Canal.

To support boaters and boating businesses, the Northampton Arm will therefore temporarily reopen from 9am on Tuesday 22 September until 3pm on Wednesday 23 September, with the last boats entering Locks 1 and 12 no later than 2pm.

This temporary opening is intended to provide an opportunity for essential boat movements while conditions remain under close review. At the end of this period the Northampton Arm will need to close again.

We will monitor the impact of this opening and continue to assess water availability. While we cannot yet confirm whether further navigation windows will be possible during October, we hope that additional opportunities may be available if conditions allow.

Please continue to check these notices for updates and plan your journey carefully, allowing sufficient time to navigate through restricted areas of the network.

What you can do to help?
Your cooperation during this time is essential and deeply appreciated. Here are some things you can do to help reduce strain on the system:

* Share locks where possible and make the best use of the water available.
* Make sure paddles are fully closed once you've passed through a lock.
* Aim for minimal contact when navigating through locks by ensuring gates are fully open as you pass through.
* Pushing gates open using a boat can damage the gate lining, increasing its leakage.
* If you spot a leak or any suspicious activities please call us on 0303 040 4040 or emailing via contact-us

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to manage the canal sustainably.

We contacted the Contractors that deal with the blockages to have a last attempt of unblocking the pipes, to ensure that we have taken the correct steps to attempt to unblock it via powerjetting, before we approached the major works of digging underneath the toilet and the Elsan, to identify any drain issues and to clear any blockages effectively, down the pipeworks.
This will be a major job to undertake, so we will be waiting on for quotes on the work.
This will mean that the Elsan facility will be unavailable for a while.

We will update the notice when we receive any updates on the works that are to be carried out.
