To undertake the bridge replacement safely, a substantial crash deck will be installed across the full width of the canal beneath the bridge. This temporary structure is required to allow the removal of the existing bridge deck, repairs and preparation of the bridge abutments, and the installation of the new bridge deck.
Boat movements will be facilitated during suitable breaks in the construction programme where it is safe and practical to do so. Opportunities for passage may be available at key stages of the works, including during bridge deck removal activities when temporary works can be adjusted to allow access. Every effort will be made to minimise the duration of the closure and we will provide further updates as the detailed construction programme is finalised.
We have worked closely with Network Rail and local marinas to minimise the impact of these essential works on customers and will continue to provide updates as the programme develops. As a result, no works will take place before Christmas 2026.

Due to the narrow section between Bridge 60 and 32 Wharf Street, a full navigation closure will be in place for the duration of the works, and no vessels will be able to pass through this stretch. We would like to advise customers that the planned third-party works to demolish and replace Bridge 128 have been rescheduled.
Following revisions to the delivery programme, the contractor working on behalf of High Speed 2 Limited will no longer be undertaking these works on the dates previously notified.
As a result, the proposed start date for the works is now 4 January, meaning that there will be no impact from HS2 works during November and December.
The programme for these works is currently under review and further updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while these arrangements are finalised, and we will continue to work closely with HS2 and their delivery teams to minimise any impact on navigation as these works progress.

As a result, navigation through the affected section will remain suspended.
The towpath in the vicinity of the works will also remain closed over the Christmas period. A signed towpath diversion will remain in place.

Vessels must also not moor on the risers on the riverside, upstream side of the lock. At high tide, a vessel moored in this location could be positioned directly above the sunken craft. As the tide falls, this could create a risk of the vessel coming into contact with or becoming caught on the submerged boat.

These works were originally planned for the recent intensive maintenance period but had to be deferred due to flooding and river conditions preventing mobilisation to site.
Following local consultation it has been agreed that this is the preferred time to undertake these essential works.

Since our last update, engineers have attended site to inspect Lock 46 following a boating incident.
Unfortunately, the lock gate has detached from its fixing. Repairs will involve replacing the anchor plate that has been pulled from the coping stone and reattaching the lock gate on the offside. The works are expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks.
During this period, a detailed repair plan will be developed, the required materials will be ordered, and consultations will take place with our Heritage and Ecology teams to ensure the works can proceed appropriately.

Please be advised that from Friday 25th September 2026 navigation through Gloucester Dock will be closed due to low water levels and continuing siltation, ahead of the dredging campaign commencing from 5th October 2026. The Trust is urgently reviewing the size and scope of this campaign to account for the increased siltation in the Docks
This closure is earlier than planned due to the channel depths reducing with fewer boats navigating through and as a consequence, we are unable to guarantee the depth of the navigation channel.
Customers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid Gloucester Docks.
Please take this opportunity if you need to move through or out of the Dock ahead of this closure.
Customers seeking to remain in Victoria Basin over winter will be unable to leave via the Dock until a safe channel has been achieved through the dredging programme.
We are unable to confirm when the Dock will re-open and the timing of reopening will be dependent on the scale of the dredging campaign and available water levels. We will however, update as soon as possible.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused during this period.

Following our previous update, repairs at Swanley have been delayed due to ongoing wet weather and the resulting ground conditions. The site remains too waterlogged to allow safe access for machinery and contractors to continue the works required to restore navigation.
We have explored a number of options to remove water from the area however, the surrounding fields and drainage ditches remain heavily saturated, limiting the effectiveness of these measures and impacting progress on the repairs.
Working closely with our contractors, the wider team is continuing to explore whether a further assisted passage can be provided while these challenging ground conditions persist.
Our focus remains on identifying a safe and practical solution, both to progress the repair works and to facilitate any potential additional boat movements through the affected section.
We expect to provide further information next week, including an update on any possible assisted passage arrangements.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the planned boat passage through Swanley between Monday 26 October and Thursday 29 October.
We know this will be disappointing for boaters who were planning to make the passage, and we are sorry for the inconvenience.
Recent wet weather has caused ground conditions on site to deteriorate significantly, which means we are unable to safely continue the temporary works needed to allow the passage to go ahead.
However, the team are currently exploring alternative options that may help facilitate a future passage through the lock. However, no arrangements have been confirmed at this stage, and we will provide a further update as more information becomes available.

The Leicester Line reservoirs have seen no meaningful refill and storage levels remain close to their minimum drawdown thresholds (as can be seen on the attached hydrographic graph, which can be viewed on the website version of this notice).
As a result, there is currently no indication that the Leicester Line will be able to reopen in the short or medium term. Any future reopening will depend on sustained reservoir recovery and improved water availability to ensure navigation can be supported without compromising water resources for the following season.
In view of the continuing closure, we strongly encourage boaters who are able to do so to consider moving closer to essential services and facilities. Navigation on the Leicester Line is already restricted, with some locks secured to conserve water, and water levels may continue to fall. Moving closer to services while conditions still allow will help ensure boaters are suitably positioned should the closure remain in place for an extended period.
We appreciate the continued patience and understanding of boaters affected by the closure. We will continue to closely monitor reservoir levels and water availability and will provide a further update when there is a meaningful change in the situation.

Following our last update, our teams have now completed repairs to Lock 7 on the Bosley Flight, and water levels have remained stable.
To help support our customers we are introducing restricted opening times to improve the likelihood of the canal remaining open for navigation.
From Thursday 5 November 2026, the following operating times will apply:

Open Thursdays only
* Locks will open from 9:00 am to allow passage through the flight.
* The last entry into the flight will be at 1:00 pm.
* All craft must have cleared the flight by 4:00 pm.
These operating arrangements are designed to support boaters in planning their journeys while allowing our teams to carefully manage water resources across the network.
Our team will continue to closely monitor the water levels and review the situation regularly. Should conditions improve, we will review these operating times and make adjustments where possible, we would still encourage customers to be prepared for the possibility of future restrictions or closures, should water levels drop.
The current restriction will be reviewed on 23 November 2026, when the Bosley Flight is scheduled to close for the planned winter works at Lock 11.

Unfortunately, it has been necessary to close the Bosley Flight between Lock 1 and Lock 12 on the Macclesfield Canal to allow our team to carry out urgent repairs to a leak on the Lock 7 tail gate.
During today's passages at Bosley, the leak has been found to be costing us too much water. While today's passages will be completed it is not sustainable for us to continue the passages without dealing with this. Continuing to operate the flight under these conditions would result in the loss of a substantial amount of water which we cannot afford, with little or no rainfall forecast.
Our engineer will attend site tomorrow to carry out an inspection, after which our local team will install stop planks and drain the affected lock to enable the necessary repairs to be completed. The site works will take place early next week. Once repairs have been completed, the team will begin replenishing water levels throughout the flight. Water levels will then be assessed before navigation can safely reopen. Our expectation is to undertake further passages once the repair is done and a further update will be provided on or before 4 November 2026.
Thank you for your patience while we do this work without which, we will not be able to operate the flight.

Since our last update, our teams have reassessed the water levels on both the Bosley and Marple Flights, and the team are satisfied that water levels have recovered enough to open both navigation.
As water levels remain under close review, we ask all boaters to help conserve water by sharing locks where possible, ensuring paddles are fully closed once you have passed through a lock and report any issues that may affect water resources to our Customer Support Team.
We will reassess water levels on the Bosley Flight on Monday 2 October . If water levels fall to a level that could impact navigation, we may need to introduce restrictions to protect available water resources and maintain safe flight operations.

Oxclose Lock remains closed to navigation while further investigation work is undertaken to establish the cause and extent of instability at the lock site.
Initial survey findings indicate that the site may be located above underlying gypsum deposits. The dissolution of gypsum by groundwater can create voids and ground instability, and this is being investigated as a possible contributing factor to the issues identified at the lock.
Survey mapping attached shows these initial findings and provides further information on the underlying geology of the area. However, further investigation is required before the cause of the instability can be confirmed and the appropriate next steps determined.
The lock will remain closed until further notice. We recognise the inconvenience this causes to boaters and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Borehole surveying is scheduled to take place from 30th November 2026 and is expected to take 12 days.
For those customers wishing to leave the Ripon canal or return to home moorings at the Racecourse Marina or Ripon Motorboat Club we are able to offer assisted passage through Oxclose Lock on the following dates: Wednesday 4th November, Wednesday 18 th November and Wednesday 9th December between 10:00 12:00.

Oxclose Lock remains closed while further investigations are undertaken to identify and assess areas of water loss through the lock chamber.
Microgravity surveys have now been completed. Borehole sampling is required as the next stage of the investigation to determine ground conditions and identify any voids surrounding the lock chamber. These inspections are currently being arranged with a specialist contractor.
We are awaiting confirmation of dates for the borehole investigations. This notice will be updated once the inspections have been completed, or by 2 November, whichever is sooner.

Oxclose Lock remains closed while additional investigations are carried out to identify and assess areas of water loss through the lock chamber.
Specialist engineers will undertake microgravity surveys and detailed inspections, from Monday 14th September 2026, to determine the extent and location of any leakage. These investigations are essential to help inform the most appropriate repair solution and ensure the long-term integrity of the structure.

Following a recent drop in water levels on the Montgomery Canal, we are taking action to restore levels to normal as quickly as possible. To safeguard water resources , all lock use between Byles Lock and Bank Lock is suspended until further notice.
New fish screens have recently been installed at the Penarth feeder to comply with Natural Resources Wales regulations. While the works temporarily affected water levels, a combination of dry weather and low river levels before installation also contributed to the current situation.
We are clearing the new screens daily and have temporarily closed locks on the canal. An unauthorised water transfer through locks upstream of Welshpool unfortunately significantly reduced water levels further, increasing the risk of damage to the canal. The locks will remain closed while levels recover.
As part of the fish screen works, a recent dredging programme has improved water abstraction at the feeder, which will help support water levels in the canal over the longer term. Subject to weather conditions and any ongoing drought impacts, we expect water levels to return to normal within the next two weeks.
We apologise for the temporary impact on navigation, but these measures are necessary to protect the canal while recovery takes place. We will continue to provide updates and look forward to reopening the locks. | 05 Nov 26 00:30:37 |

Works at Slaithwaite reservoir remain ongoing, with levels within the reservoir drawn down to enable these works to take place safely. As such, there is no water available to feed to the canal and enable navigation. This drawdown of the reservoir will stay in place until the works complete in Spring 2027, and therefore re-opening the navigation before this time is unlikely.
We will provide further update on navigation as the works at the reservoir progress through the winter months.

Works taking place at Slaithwaite Reservoir have necessitated a drawdown of reservoir levels that has been ongoing for several months. With recent warm, dry weather and an increase in boat movement on the canal, we have insufficient water resources to maintain navigation for the long term on the lower section of the canal.
From Monday 15th June 2026 navigation between Lock 1E and Lock 31E will close with these locks being padlocked closed.
Whilst the closure is in effect passage will only be possible between Standedge Tunnel and Lock 31E. Anyone looking to transit through Standedge Tunnel from Diggle in the Northwest will only be permitted to do so with a return tunnel booking. Boats will be able to turn in the winding hole above Lock 31E.

We are pleased to advise that good progress continues to be made on the major reconstruction works following the breach on the Llangollen Canal near Whitchurch.
Following completion of the ground investigations, engineering surveys and detailed design, work to rebuild the embankment is now well underway. We currently expect the canal to reopen in March 2027, ahead of Easter and the start of the main boating season.
The embankment rebuild is expected to be completed before Christmas, after which a concrete base will be laid and construction of the new canal channel will begin.
As with all major construction projects, progress remains dependent on weather conditions. We will continue to provide updates as the works progress and will confirm the reopening date when we are able to do so.

Repair works continue at the breach site. The canal dams will remain in place for the foreseeable future while repair works continue. Retaining the dams will support the ongoing programme of works and enable the remaining repairs to be completed as efficiently as possible.

Reconstruction works on the canal embankment have now recommenced.
Following further assessment of ground conditions, areas of soft material within the existing embankment are being removed and replaced with compacted granular fill. In addition, the embankment design has been enhanced through the introduction of a Mechanically Stabilised Layer within the lower section of the new embankment, providing additional strength and resilience.
The canal dams recently relocated to the southern end of the embankment will remain in place for the duration of the works.

We understand how much the Anderton Boat Lift means to boaters, visitors and the community. We're focussed on finding a solution to get the lift operational again while we look to secure the larger investment for its long-term future. We are still aiming to reopen one caisson in May 2027, as planned.
Since the closure of the lift, the Trust has carried out extensive work to identify the best way to repair and modify the caisson gate lifting mechanisms to prevent similar failures happening again. Several options were considered and in Autumn 2025, after the investigation into the cause of failure had been completed, the detailed engineering design began. The design considered a solution that would remove the need for cables and provide a robust and reliable lifting mechanism. However, as the designs have progressed, the complexity of doing this on such a historic structure has led to the scope, and the forecast cost, increasing significantly – to the point where that option is currently neither practical nor affordable. Consequently, we have needed to consider an alternative solution, based more closely on the existing cable system, to get the lift open and operational for boaters and all those who visit. The solution needs to be safe, legally compliant and in keeping with the historic status of the structure.
We believe we have now found a proposal which requires testing. The next step is for specialist engineers who are familiar with these lifting systems to design and replace the components required before undertaking a series of tests to prove that the solution is safe and viable. The process will also confirm what other works are necessary prior to the lift re-opening for boat use.
Customers and visitors will be able to see this activity being undertaken at the lift this Autumn as we replace elements of the lifting systems and begin testing procedures. We expect to know by December 2026 what further work is required in the new year to reopen the lift by May 2027. We will keep everyone updated through this process as to whether the tests are successful and confirm the forecast opening date.
The Trust will hold an open day at Anderton in the Autumn. We'll publish the date once we have the testing programme and at the most helpful point to share progress. The Trust is aware of how frustrating the closure of the lift has been to boaters and that reopening the lift has seemed to be straightforward to many outside of the project team. The open day will provide an opportunity to share more about the options that have been explored and the constraints we have had to work within to get the lift open. It will also be an opportunity to hear about how we approach a secure future for the boat lift in the longer term. Our priority remains to get the lift operating again for boats. We're sorry for the time it has taken to get to this point – and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and support while we work towards a solution and the reopening of the lift.

Earlier this year, the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after a lifting wire failure during planned routine maintenance by our teams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reopen the lift using the existing gate lifting system. Trust engineers have been working closely with specialist consultants to develop a solution that will see the original rope-and-pulley mechanism replaced on all gates with a more modern, robust and safer lifting system making the lift more reliable.
We're pleased to confirm that the Trust has prioritised the funding required to support the detailed engineering design. However, this work will take time, and the lift will remain closed throughout all next year 2026. We understand how frustrating this closure will be for boaters who regularly use this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and the rest of the Trust's network. The significant investment we're making into this repair reflects how important the lift is to our waterways. Although the lift itself will stay closed, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre will remain open, with an exciting programme of events and activities planned for 2026. We hope you'll continue to visit and enjoy everything the site has to offer.
This essential redesign work is being delivered ahead of, and separately from, the wider refurbishment programme. We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.
We also understand the impact that Marsh Lock's closure is having on customers wanting to visit the Weaver. Our teams are working through the options to bring the lock back into operation, and you can follow updates here.
