29181Anderton LiftAnderton Lift (River Weaver)Anderton Lift (Trent and Mersey)03 January 202506 November 2026Earlier this year, the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after a lifting wire failure during planned routine maintenance by our teams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reopen the lift using the existing gate lifting system. Trust engineers have been working closely with specialist consultants to develop a solution that will see the original rope-and-pulley mechanism replaced on all gates with a more modern, robust and safer lifting system making the lift more reliable.

We're pleased to confirm that the Trust has prioritised the funding required to support the detailed engineering design. However, this work will take time, and the lift will remain closed throughout all next year 2026. We understand how frustrating this closure will be for boaters who regularly use this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and the rest of the Trust's network. The significant investment we're making into this repair reflects how important the lift is to our waterways. Although the lift itself will stay closed, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre will remain open, with an exciting programme of events and activities planned for 2026. We hope you'll continue to visit and enjoy everything the site has to offer.

This essential redesign work is being delivered ahead of, and separately from, the wider refurbishment programme. We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.

We also understand the impact that Marsh Lock's closure is having on customers wanting to visit the Weaver. Our teams are working through the options to bring the lock back into operation, and you can follow updates [here.](

This section is managed by the Bridgewater Canal Company, not the Canal & River Trust. However, as this canal connects to our network and forms part of the Cheshire Cruising Ring, we are liaising closely with them.

Nearest Winding Holes:

* West of the Breach: Between Oughtrington Bridge No. 24 and Lymm Bridge No. 23.
* East of the Breach: Between Seamon's Moss Bridge No. 29 and Broadheath Bridge No. 30.

Originally, these works were scheduled to take place over three separate stoppages. However, they can now be completed within a single two-week stoppage, supplemented by two additional navigation restrictions. We have experienced challenges with effectively damming the lock, which has caused delays in replacing the bottom gates. This extension will include the Christmas break period, during which the lock will remain closed.
Our team is working extended hours, including weekends, to recover as much time as possible before Christmas and to minimise disruption afterwards.

We thank our customers for their patience on the day with our teams.

The next opportunity for boats returning home via the Weaver is planned for 7 January 2026, with bookings now open. Until the further necessary remedial works are completed, alternative dates in the new year cannot yet be confirmed.

This passage is currently open only for narrowboats, under a single gate manual operation.

Customers wishing to take part in the 7 January passage are asked to contact our North West Customer Service Team on 0303 0404 040 to book their place and receive further details and timings.

We continue to appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while investigations and repair works at Marsh Lock continue. Our teams, together with colleagues at Peel, are working hard behind the scenes to understand and implement a solution that will bring the lock back into operation, maintaining this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and our wider waterways network.

29523Rochdale CanalOxford Road Lock No 88Oxford Road Lock No 8812 January 202630 January 2026Whilst the planned navigation closure is underway at the nearby Lock 81, we are taking the opportunity to schedule a navigation closure to carry out grouting works at Lock 88.  Grouting is a repair method where special cement is injected into cracks or gaps in the lock's structure. This helps stop leaks, strengthens the lock, and keeps it working well for years to come.  The need for these works has been recently identified so we are combining the works alongside Lock 81 to minimise customer impact. This closure is necessary to allow our teams to manage and stabilise water levels safely and effectively for boats currently remaining in the affected pounds. The water supply to these sections has been impacted by the breach, and restricting movement is essential for all boats in this area.

The team has been on site this morning to carry out an investigation into what is preventing them from shutting. Subsequent attempts at a repair have not been successful so the decision has been made to provide assisted passage.

We will therefore be offering assisted passage at Fishpond Lock on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, between 10am and 2pm, until further notice.

LOCK OPERATION – Please Follow the below guidance to operate the lock
 
For Craft going upstream towards Hertford.
1.      Open the sluices to drain the lock to low level.
2.      Open the Downstream gates
3.      Manoeuvre your craft into the basin
4.      Close the gates
5.      ENSURE that the Sluice is fully closed for both downstream gates ( see picture below)
6.      Open the upstream sluices and allow the basin to fill
7.      Close the upstream sluice
8.      Open the gates
Failure to check Point (5) may result in having to drain the basin and start again.

For Craft travelling away from Hertford
1.      Ensure that the downstream gates are closed
2.      Close the Sluices of the downstream gates (this MUST be done when the chamber is at low level)
3.      Check the Slice marker (picture above) is fully closed
4.      Open the Upstream sluices  
5.      Fill the basin
6.      Open the gates and manoeuvre the craft into the lock basin
7.      Close the Upstream sluice and gates
8.      Open the downstream sluice drain the basin

29181Anderton LiftAnderton Lift (River Weaver)Anderton Lift (Trent and Mersey)03 January 202506 November 2026Earlier this year, the Anderton Boat Lift was closed after a lifting wire failure during planned routine maintenance by our teams. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reopen the lift using the existing gate lifting system. Trust engineers have been working closely with specialist consultants to develop a solution that will see the original rope-and-pulley mechanism replaced on all gates with a more modern, robust and safer lifting system making the lift more reliable.

We're pleased to confirm that the Trust has prioritised the funding required to support the detailed engineering design. However, this work will take time, and the lift will remain closed throughout all next year 2026. We understand how frustrating this closure will be for boaters who regularly use this vital link between the Weaver Navigation and the rest of the Trust's network. The significant investment we're making into this repair reflects how important the lift is to our waterways. Although the lift itself will stay closed, the Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre will remain open, with an exciting programme of events and activities planned for 2026. We hope you'll continue to visit and enjoy everything the site has to offer.

This essential redesign work is being delivered ahead of, and separately from, the wider refurbishment programme. We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.

We also understand the impact that Marsh Lock's closure is having on customers wanting to visit the Weaver. Our teams are working through the options to bring the lock back into operation, and you can follow updates [here.](

The next opportunity for boats returning home via the Weaver is planned for 7 January 2026, with bookings now open. Until the further necessary remedial works are completed, alternative dates in the new year cannot yet be confirmed.

This passage is currently open only for narrowboats, under a single gate manual operation.

This helps stop leaks, strengthens the lock, and keeps it working well for years to come.  The need for these works has been recently identified so we are combining the works alongside Lock 81 to minimise customer impact. However, they can now be completed within a single two-week stoppage, supplemented by two additional navigation restrictions. LOCK OPERATION – Please Follow the below guidance to operate the lock
 
For Craft going upstream towards Hertford.
1.      Open the sluices to drain the lock to low level.
2.      Open the Downstream gates
3.      Manoeuvre your craft into the basin
4.      Close the gates
5.      ENSURE that the Sluice is fully closed for both downstream gates ( see picture below)
6.      Open the upstream sluices and allow the basin to fill
7.      Close the upstream sluice
8.      Open the gates
Failure to check Point (5) may result in having to drain the basin and start again.

For Craft travelling away from Hertford
1.      Ensure that the downstream gates are closed
2.      Close the Sluices of the downstream gates (this MUST be done when the chamber is at low level)
3.      Check the Slice marker (picture above) is fully closed
4.      Open the Upstream sluices  
5.      Fill the basin
6.      Open the gates and manoeuvre the craft into the lock basin
7.      Close the Upstream sluice and gates
8.      Open the downstream sluice drain the basin
