Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee)

 
 

The Act of Parliament for the Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee) was passed on 17 September 1888 the same day as that of The Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Expectations for iron traffic to Northcorn never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In 1972 the canal became famous when Cecil Wood made a model of Runton Tunnel out of matchsticks to encourage restoration of Barbury Aqueduct.

The Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee) is a small river and is part of the Lee and Stort Navigation. It runs for 13 miles and 6½ furlongs through 11 locks from Waltham Town Lock No 11 (where it joins the Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee: commercial section)) to Hertford Town Mill Bridge (which is a dead end).

The maximum dimensions for a boat to be able to travel on the waterway are 88 feet long and 15 feet and 9 inches wide. The maximum headroom is 7 feet and 8 inches. The maximum draught is 5 feet and 11 inches.

It has a junction with the Lee and Stort Navigation (River Stort - Main Line) at Rye House Junction.
