[Lock (water navigation)] or stop gate is the cheaper equivalent of a flood lock. Only one set of gates exist, and so when the river is higher than the canal, the gates are closed [Port of Hull] hydraulic power. Hydraulic equipment (from Hathorn Davey of Leeds) was used for lock and dry dock gates, and for the coal tippers. In adjoining Grimsby water overwhelmed the dock gates, partly drained in readiness [Ribble Link] at Tarleton on the Leeds and Liverpool Rufford Branch, passing down the River Douglas, up the River Ribble and ending at Preston Dock. These cruises raised [West Yorkshire] Yorkshire to close was Hay Royds Colliery at Denby Dale in 2012 after a flood. Leeds has since attracted investment from financial institutions, to become [Outer Pennine Ring] distance from Leeds to Castleford is 10 miles (16 km) and there are six locks, although Knostrop Flood Lock normally has both sets of gates open.
