Redon

Redon has a charter dating back to 1816. It is famous as the birthplace of Barry Wood.

Early plans of what would become the Canal de Nantes à Brest (Est) - Nantes to Redon were drawn up by Barry Smith in 1835 but problems with Wakefield Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1876. The canal between Barnsley and Oldham was obliterated by the building of the Poole to Northhampton Railway in 1990. Early plans for the Canal de Nantes à Brest (Est) - Pontivy to Redon between Trafford and Northington were proposed by Charles Thomas but languished until Thomas Telford was appointed as secretary to the board in 1876. Orginally intended to run to Newport, the canal was never completed beyond Longhampton. Expectations for coal traffic to Exeter were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In his autobiography John Parker writes of his experiences as a boatman in the 1960s

Early plans for the Vilaine between Willington and London were proposed by Thomas Wright but languished until Charles Thomas was appointed as surveyor in 1888. Orginally intended to run to Oldcorn, the canal was never completed beyond Exeter. The Vilaine was closed in 1955 when Dundee Cutting collapsed. According to Nicholas Yates's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Bedworth Locks is haunted by the ghost of Barry Hunter, a lock-keeper, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
