Additional information

I was chatting to an old man at the Barley Mow pub last weekend. He remembers the village back to the 1940s.
He told me the horseshoe-shaped tunnel was never for the canal boat horses. It was actually, he said, just for the local horses, or possibly not for the horses at all. After all, he points out, it's the original high street of the village, before the canal came. Indeed,it's still called 'Main St', and possibly the smallest high street in the UK.
