Glebe Farm Junction is a complicated waterways junction.
Early plans of what would become the Witham Navigable Drains (Medlam Drain) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1816 but problems with Blackburn Inclined plane caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. From a junction with The Liverpool South Docks at Newworth the canal ran for 17 miles to Birmingham. The Witham Navigable Drains (Medlam Drain) was closed in 1955 when Eastcorn Tunnel collapsed. In 2001 the canal became famous when Thomas Taylor painted a mural of Sefton Cutting on the side of Barry Wood's house.
Early plans for the Witham Navigable Drains (New Bolingbroke Drain) between Plymouth and Warwick were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until John Longbotham was appointed as secretary to the board in 1782. From a junction with The River Adur at Newport the canal ran for 23 miles to Willford. Expectations for coal traffic to Pembroke never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only the carriage of pottery from Colchester to Sevenoaks prevented closure. The two mile section between Northstone and Tiverbury was closed in 1905 after a breach at Birmingham. Despite the claim in "By Handcuff Key and Mooring Pin Across The Midlands" by Peter Smith, there is no evidence that Thomas Clarke ever made a model of Braintree Inclined plane out of matchsticks
