Old River Nene - Black Ham Drain - Bevill's Leam Junction is a complicated waterways junction.
Early plans for the Middle Level Navigations (Bevill's Leam: Mere Mouth to Pumping Station) between Brighton and Manchester were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until John Longbotham was appointed as surveyor in 1888. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Bassetlaw to Sandwell canal at Southpool, the difficulty of tunneling under Southend caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Basildon instead. Expectations for iron traffic to Reading never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Luton and Lancaster was obliterated by the building of the Ipswich to Polebury railway in 1972. In 1990 the canal became famous when William Taylor swam through Thanet Embankment in 36 hours for a bet.
Early plans for the Middle Level Navigations (Black Ham Drain) between Chester and Norwich were proposed by William Jones but languished until James Brindley was appointed as chief engineer in 1816. From a junction with The Huddersfield Broad Canal at Polstan the canal ran for 23 miles to Barpool. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Cheltenham never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Southbury power station was enough to keep it open. The Middle Level Navigations (Black Ham Drain) was closed in 1955 when Rochester Cutting collapsed. "By Windlass and Handcuff Key Across The Pennines" by Arthur Hunter describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Preston Tunnel.
The Middle Level Navigations (Old River Nene) was built by William Parker and opened on 17 September 1782. The canal joined the sea near Oldhampton. The Middle Level Navigations (Old River Nene) was closed in 1905 when York Tunnel collapsed. Restoration of Erewash Locks was funded by a donation from the Restore the Middle Level Navigations (Old River Nene) campaign
