![Castles of Leinster: Black Castle, Leighlinbridge, Carlow (1). Called Black Castle merely to distinguish it from the now vanished White Castle that was supposedly built in 1408 by Gerald, Earl of Kildare. Black Castle probably dates from the 1540s in its present form, built by Sir Edward Bellingham, Lord Deputy of Ireland. Its entrance in the east wall is protected by a machicolation and a murder hole, with a stair leading from it up to a vaulted loft having a single living room above. The tower lies in the NW corner of a bawn now reduced to just fragments of its north and south walls.[[6589928]] by Garry Dickinson – 17 September 2013](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/06/58/99/6589923_137e8da2_120x120.jpg)

![Castles of Leinster: Leighlinbridge, Carlow (1). Leighlinbridge Castle, or Black Castle as it is known (to distinguish it from the former vanished White Castle), stands guard by the bridge on the east bank of the River Barrow. It probably dates from the 1540s.[[2495080]] by Mike Searle – 13 June 2011](https://s1.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/49/50/2495065_cbda925f_120x120.jpg)
