[Eastham Unit] magazine had a cover story on Eastham with title "America's Toughest Prison. In 1984 several prisoners short-circuited the locks on their cells and held a [Eastham, Merseyside] War II siren and has been sounded each morning for at least 50 years. Eastham Locks form the western end of the Manchester Ship Canal, and is the largest [Ship canal] different areas previously inaccessible to canals. These facilities were built near Eastham locks at entrance [Queen Elizabeth II Dock] began in 1949, adjacent to the entrance of the Manchester Ship Canal at Eastham Locks and opening directly onto the river. The dock was built to provide berthing [River Mersey] Peninsula to the west. The Manchester Ship Canal enters the river at Eastham Locks. The eastern part of the estuary is much affected by silting, and part [Manchester] Rivers Irwell and Mersey, running 36 miles (58 km) from Salford to Eastham Locks on the tidal Mersey. This enabled oceangoing ships to sail right into [Ellesmere Port and Neston] an industrial town on the Manchester Ship Canal, which connects at Eastham locks to the River Mersey. The rest of the district was partly rural and partly [Bonnie and Clyde] when Barrow was arrested and convicted of auto theft. Clyde was sent to Eastham Prison Farm in April 1930 at the age of 21.
