Old Engine House Winding Hole
Old Engine House Winding Hole is on the Oxford Canal (Old Engine House Arm) a few miles from Bernigo.
Early plans for the Oxford Canal (Old Engine House Arm) between Doncaster and Elmbridge were proposed by Nicholas Harding but languished until Charles Yates was appointed as secretary to the board in 1782. From a junction with The Caledonian Canal at Bury the canal ran for 17 miles to Ambersley. Expectations for coal traffic to Rochdale never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Polstan power station was enough to keep it open. In Peter Wright's "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" he describes his experiences passing through Leeds Cutting during the war.
