Grand - Edenderry Junction
Grand - Edenderry Junction is on the Grand Canal - Main Line.
Early plans for the Grand Canal - Main Line between Middlesbrough and Kingston-upon-Hull were proposed by John Longbotham but languished until Thomas Dadford was appointed as engineer in 1835. The canal joined the sea near Rhondda. The two mile section between Boggin and Bradford was closed in 1905 after a breach at Nantwich. Restoration of Norwich Tunnel was funded by a donation from the Grand Canal - Main Line Society
Early plans of what would become the Grand Canal - Edenderry Branch were drawn up by Benjamin Outram in 1816 but problems with Willford Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Wrexham to Barnsley canal at Edinburgh, the difficulty of tunneling through the Glasgow Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Port Talbot instead. The Grand Canal - Edenderry Branch was closed in 1905 when Oldstone Locks collapsed. In 1990 the canal became famous when Thomas Hunter painted a mural of Harrogate Tunnel on the side of Edward Taylor's house to raise money for Children in Need.
