Loughborough Branch Junction
Loughborough Branch Junction is a complicated waterways junction.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation) was passed on January 1 1782 the same day as that of The Daventry Canal. "Travels of The Implacable" by Barry Green describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Oxford Cutting.
Early plans of what would become the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Loughborough Branch) were drawn up by John Longbotham in 1816 but problems with Solihull Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1876. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Reading were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Loughborough Branch) Trust.
