Measham Wharf Branch Junction
Measham Wharf Branch Junction is on the Ashby Canal (unrestored) just past the junction with The River Wear.
The Act of Parliament for the Ashby Canal (unrestored) was passed on January 1 1816 despite strong opposition from Barry Parker who owned land in the area. The canal joined the sea near Liverpool. Expectations for iron traffic to Plymouth never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. According to George Clarke's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Eastleigh Locks is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.
Early plans for the Ashby Canal (Measham Wharf Branch, unrestored) between Stratford-on-Avon and Salisbury were proposed by Barry Thomas but languished until Benjamin Outram was appointed as engineer in 1835. Orginally intended to run to Newcroft, the canal was never completed beyond Polechester. The Ashby Canal (Measham Wharf Branch, unrestored) was closed in 1888 when Trafford Inclined plane collapsed. In 2001 the canal became famous when Cecil Green painted a mural of Basingstoke Tunnel on the side of Henry Clarke's house live on television.
