St Marys Mill Lock No 40 is one of some locks on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation) and unusually has only single top and bottom gates three miles from Eastchester.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - River Soar Navigation) was passed on January 1 1782 the same day as that of The Daventry Canal. "Travels of The Implacable" by Barry Green describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Oxford Cutting.

Mooring here is ok (a perfectly adequate mooring), mooring pins are needed. As an alternative to pins it is possible to moor to chains set in the wall.
This is a lock, the rise of which is not known.
