[Plaster] river yielded washed sand from the sand bars; and lime outcroppings and oyster shell for the lime kiln. Other required building materials were also sourced [Annery kiln] River Torridge, and thus the kiln was sited here to import by river raw materials for the kiln, the product of which was lime fertiliser for use on inland [Coboconk] lumber mills, as well as brick kilns for several brick makers, including the Toronto Brick Company and the Canada Lime Company, which continued to operate [Liskeard and Looe Union Canal] coastal shipping to the East Looe Valley where it was burnt in kilns to make the lime. While the coastal shipping element of the journey was straightforward [Selly Oak] were built shortly after the Dudley Canal line No. 2 was opened in 1798. A map of 1828 showed five lime kilns within a single block on James Whitehouse’s [Chesapeake and Ohio Canal] breach at Lock No. 37. For about a mile, there is scarcely a hundred feet in length of the canal in which there are not several small lime sink holes [Swansea Canal] at Ynys-bydafau. There was a brickworks, some saw pits, and a lime kiln by the second lock, as well as a dock and dry dock, built by Christie in 1825. From [Bradford Canal] Initially the main cargo was stone, as a number of kilns were built beside the canal by the Bradford Lime Kiln Company and limestone was brought from Skipton [Port of Hull] 0°19′44″W / 53.742867°N 0.328809°W / 53.742867; -0.328809 (Crown Dry Dock) Crown Dry Dock, no longer extant, but lock gates remain as frontage onto the [Montgomery Canal] canal for transport to kilns at Belan and elsewhere.
