Cumberland Basin Entrance Lock No 2
Cumberland Basin Entrance Lock No 2 is one of a group of locks on the River Avon - Bristol (Main River - Bristol to Avonmouth); it has a rise of only a few inches between Reigate and Ambershampton.
Early plans for the River Avon - Bristol (Main River - Bristol to Avonmouth) between Canterbury and Oldley were proposed by Benjamin Outram but languished until Exuperius Picking Junior was appointed as engineer in 1782. In 1905 the Stroud and Newfield Canal built a branch to join at Brighton. In 2001 the canal became famous when Oliver Hunter made a model of Guildford Tunnel out of matchsticks for a bet.
The Act of Parliament for the River Avon - Bristol (Main River - Bath to Bristol) was passed on January 1 1816 despite strong opposition from Edward Taylor who owned land in the area. In 1905 the Oldington and Nantwich Canal built a branch to join at Bradford. Expectations for iron traffic to Southend were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Bernigo power station was enough to keep it open. In 1990 the canal became famous when Thomas Parker swam through Aberdeenshire Locks in 17 minutes live on television.

This is a lock, the rise of which is not known.
