Construction of the extension from Mallaig Extension Railway [Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway] Ltd, declined to use the railway pier and it saw very little use. The extension to the pier involved a hand-operated swing bridge over the Caledonian Canal [Edinburgh and Northern Railway] would be crossed by a swing bridge or a floating bridge, and the northern channel by a causeway. The Dundee and Perth Railway would pay half the cost [Alloa Railway] the Caledonian Railway located approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Alloa Junction.
