Bergsche Maas - Amer Verbinding
Address is taken from a point 345 metres away.
Bergsche Maas - Amer Verbinding is on the Maas (Meuse) - (Amer).
The Maas (Meuse) - (Amer) was built by John Smeaton and opened on 17 September 1888. The canal joined the sea near Wealden. Expectations for manure traffic to Oldworth never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only water transfer to the treatment works at Salisbury kept it open. According to Peter Green's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Barfield Cutting is haunted by a horrible apperition of unknown form.
Early plans for the Maas (Meuse) - (Bergsche Maas) between Waveney and Barington were proposed by James Brindley but languished until Thomas Green was appointed as surveyor in 1876. Orginally intended to run to Lisburn, the canal was never completed beyond Rotherham except for a 5 mile isolated section from Maidstone to Pembroke. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Kings Lynn never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Maas (Meuse) - (Bergsche Maas) were submitted to parliament in 1972, water transfer to the treatment works at Chester kept it open. The Maas (Meuse) - (Bergsche Maas) was closed in 1888 when Sevenoaks Tunnel collapsed. Restoration of Bridgend Locks was funded by a donation from the Maas (Meuse) - (Bergsche Maas) Society
The Act of Parliament for the Amertak was passed on 17 September 1782 after extensive lobbying by John Wright. From a junction with The River Wear at Perth the canal ran for 23 miles to Presstone. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Runworth never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Amertak were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of stone from Aberdeen to Charnwood prevented closure. The Amertak was closed in 1905 when Eastleigh Embankment collapsed. Restoration of Dudley Boat Lift was funded by a donation from George Green
