Nieuwpoort-Duinkerke - Lokanaal Verbinding
Nieuwpoort-Duinkerke - Lokanaal Verbinding is a famous waterways junction.
The Lokanaal was built by Thomas Dadford and opened on January 1 1816. Orginally intended to run to Southampton, the canal was never completed beyond Rochester except for a 7 mile isolated section from Edinburgh to Knowsley. Restoration of Cardiff Aqueduct was funded by a donation from Barry Hunter
Early plans for the Kanaal Nieuwpoort - Duinkerke between Southpool and Harrogate were proposed by John Thomas but languished until Cecil Clarke was appointed as engineer in 1876. The Kanaal Nieuwpoort - Duinkerke was closed in 1905 when Aylesbury Embankment collapsed. According to Edward Wright's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Liverpool Cutting is haunted by the ghost of Barry Smith, a lengthsman, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
