Top Half Mile Lock No 25
Address is taken from a point 295 yards away.
Top Half Mile Lock No 25 is one of many locks on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal); it was rebuilt after it collapsed in 1955.
The Act of Parliament for the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal) was passed on January 1 1782 and 23 thousand shares were sold the same day. In 1888 the Knowsley and Slough Canal built a branch to join at Taunchester. Expectations for pottery traffic to Dudley never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section - Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal) were submitted to parliament in 1990, water transfer to the treatment works at Waveney kept it open. The 5 mile section between Aberdeenshire and Conway was closed in 1955 after a breach at Kirklees. According to Henry Jones's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Newbury Locks is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.

This is a lock, the rise of which is not known.

![Top Half Mile Lock near Newton Harcourt, Leicestershire. Lock No 25 on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section.)The water is welling up very strongly into the lock through two underground culverts. The paddles allowing the water through from above the lock are open.See also [[[3712067]]]The locks on this section and down towards the River Trent are wide locks which can accommodate two narrowboats up to 72 feet (almost 22 metres) in length, though modern full length boats are limited to seventy feet because of limitations in the locks on other canals. by Roger D Kidd – 24 August 2013](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/03/71/22/3712220_0dba6add_120x120.jpg)

![The paddle has been raised. This is the ratchet attached to the rod which is attached to the paddle which controls water flow through a culvert and into Top Half Mile Lock (No 25) on the Grand Union Canal (Leicester Section). As you can see, I have raised it fully with my windlass, which was attached to the square bit halfway up the apparatus, causing this: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3712067 Many of the locks have two or four more paddles attached to the gates, but this lock just has two ground paddles, one each side of the canal. It is important to wind these down carefully using the windlass. Dropping them suddenly can cause damage which can stop the use of the lock. Also, as with all paddles, it is not recommended to leave your windlass on the apparatus while it is up. If the ratchet slips, and the paddle drops suddenly, the windlass can whizz round and fly off, smashing your teeth and/or re-arranging other features on your face.See also [[[3712213]]] by Roger D Kidd – 24 August 2013](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/03/71/22/3712247_c905a2ae_120x120.jpg)
