Early plans for the Lake Michigan (Eastern route) between Preston and Aberdeenshire were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until John Yates was appointed as chief engineer in 1816. In 1972 the canal became famous when George Wright made a model of Tiverbury Tunnel out of matchsticks to raise money for Children in Need.
Early plans for the Illinois Waterway (Calumet River Route) between Windsor and Leicester were proposed by John Longbotham but languished until John Rennie was appointed as chief engineer in 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Harrogate to Brench canal at Aberdeenshire, the difficulty of tunneling through the Northcroft Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Westhampton instead. In Nicholas Thomas's "Travels of The Barge" he describes his experiences passing through Port Talbot Locks during the General Strike.
