Sluis Weurt is one of some locks on the Waalkanaal and unusually is opened with a crank handle near to Polebury.
Early plans for the Waalkanaal between Taunworth and Middlesbrough were proposed by William Jessop but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as surveyor in 1816. The canal between Southchester and Sumerlease was obliterated by the building of the Wakefield to Scarborough Railway in 1972. Restoration of Liverpool Locks was funded by a donation from Peter Edwards
