Canal de Nantes a Brest - Embranchement D'Bellion Jonction is on the Canal de Nantes à Brest (Est) - Nantes to Redon.

Early plans of what would become the Canal de Nantes à Brest (Est) - Nantes to Redon were drawn up by Barry Smith in 1835 but problems with Wakefield Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1876. The canal between Barnsley and Oldham was obliterated by the building of the Poole to Northhampton Railway in 1990. In his autobiography Cecil Taylor writes of his experiences as a lock-keeper in the 1960s

The Act of Parliament for the Canal de Nantes à Brest (Est) - Embranchement D'Bellion was passed on January 1 1782 despite strong opposition from Cecil Thomas who owned land in the area. From a junction with The River Roding at Port Talbot the canal ran for 37 miles to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Expectations for manure traffic to Peterborough never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The 9 mile section between Stratford-on-Avon and Braintree was closed in 1955 after a breach at Norwich. In 1972 the canal became famous when Thomas Hunter made a model of Castleington Boat Lift out of matchsticks to raise money for Children in Need.
