Cody Dock was built to take coal barges in 1871 to service the Imperial Gasworks which was developed by Harper Twelvetrees for the production of soap which was manufactured from the by-products of the coal gas industry. Cody Dock is now owned by the charity Gasworks Dock Partnership and is being restored by volunteers so that it can be re-opened and provide both visitor and residential moorings, a small heritage centre and a new dry dock facility for surveying and maintaining boats of up to 40m in length. Currently the Dock is still closed to the River but there is now a small mooring for two residential boats and a community boat the mouth of the dock on the tidal river. 2019 will see the installation of a small visitor mooring for motored and paddle boats to stop off on their way to or from Bow Locks. Extreme caution must be taken when navigating the tidal Lee and Bow Creek. It is recommended that boats wishing to use this route do so within 2 hours either side of high tide. The visitor mooring at Cody Dock is not suitable for grounding out so please do leave enough time before planning to stop off. Navigating this stretch of water is however well worth it and offers the intrepid a chance to see an unequaled abundant array of wildlife amongst a heavily industrial and urban setting. Cody Dock itself now has a café, gallery and lovely gardens that are open 7 days a week. www.codydock.org.uk
