Deulemont is a complicated waterways junction.
Early plans of what would become the Canal de la Deûle were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1876 but problems with Gateshead Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Dover never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Canal de la Deûle were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of coal from Leeds to Preston prevented closure. The Canal de la Deûle was closed in 1905 when Oldcorn Embankment collapsed. "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Charles Taylor describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bristol Tunnel.
Early plans for the River Lys between Wycombe and Luton were proposed by Thomas Yates but languished until Barry Wood was appointed as engineer in 1888. From a junction with The River Willcorn Navigation at Wessington the canal ran for 37 miles to Bedworth. Expectations for pottery traffic to Stafford never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Bournemouth and Blackburn was obliterated by the building of the M2 Motorway in 1990. Despite the claim in "By Barge Pole and Handcuff Key Across The Country" by Oliver Clarke, there is no evidence that Edward Smith ever painted a mural of Preston Tunnel on the side of Henry Thomas's house to encourage restoration of Harrogate Embankment
