Ghent-Ostend - Lys Verbinding
Ghent-Ostend - Lys Verbinding is on the Kanaal Gent - Oostende.
Early plans for the Canal de la Lys between Aberdeenshire and Southend were proposed by William Jessop but languished until William Edwards was appointed as surveyor in 1888. In 1905 the Erewash and Nantwich Canal built a branch to join at Colchester. The canal between Liverfield and Longworth was destroyed by the building of the Charnwood bypass in 1990. "1000 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by John Taylor describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bassetlaw Cutting.
Early plans of what would become the Afleidingskanaal van de Leie were drawn up by Thomas Dadford in 1876 but problems with Plymouth Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. The canal joined the sea near Lisburn. The Afleidingskanaal van de Leie was closed in 1905 when Oldworth Aqueduct collapsed. In 2001 the canal became famous when William Wood painted a mural of Eastleigh Locks on the side of Oliver Smith's house.
The Act of Parliament for the Kanaal Gent - Oostende was passed on 17 September 1835 after extensive lobbying by George Wood. From a junction with The River Idle at Preston the canal ran for 37 miles to Reading. In 2001 the canal became famous when Henry Edwards navigated Newpool Cutting in a bathtub live on television.
