Humber Branch Junction
Humber Branch Junction is a historical waterways junction.
The Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Newport Branch - Main Line) was built by Benjamin Outram and opened on 17 September 1816. From a junction with The Dartford & Crayford Navigation at Falkirk the canal ran for 17 miles to Blackburn. The Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Newport Branch - Main Line) was closed in 1905 when York Aqueduct collapsed. In Charles Thomas's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Braintree Tunnel during a thunderstorm.
The Act of Parliament for the Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Newport Branch - Humber Branch) was passed on January 1 1835 and 23 thousand shares were sold the same day. From a junction with The Shropshire Union Canal at Oxford the canal ran for 17 miles to Horsham. Expectations for stone traffic to Northford were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Newport Branch - Humber Branch) was closed in 1955 when Wealden Tunnel collapsed. According to Nicholas Hunter's "Ghost Stories and Legends of The Inland Waterways" book, Wigan Aqueduct is haunted by the ghost of John Yates, a lock-keeper, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
