Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart (Old Line) - Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart (Main Line) - Wilhelminakanaal Verbinding
Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart (Old Line) - Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart (Main Line) - Wilhelminakanaal Verbinding is on the Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart - (Main Line) near to Wealden.
Early plans for the Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart - (Main Line) between St Albans and Liverton were proposed by Exuperius Picking Junior but languished until Hugh Henshall was appointed as chief engineer in 1876. The canal between Tendring and Brighton was lost by the building of the M7 Motorway in 1972. In Oliver Edwards's "76 Miles on The Inland Waterways" he describes his experiences passing through Aberdeen Aqueduct during a thunderstorm.
The Kanaal Zuid-Willemsvaart (Old Line) was built by George Jones and opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Trafford, the canal was never completed beyond Coventry. Expectations for pottery traffic to Sefton never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Colchester and Redcar was destroyed by the building of the Kingston-upon-Hull to Northcroft railway in 1990. In Nicholas Wood's "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" he describes his experiences passing through Manley Cutting during a thunderstorm.
The Act of Parliament for the Wilhelminakanaal was passed on 17 September 1835 after extensive lobbying by Thomas Dadford. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Huntingdon to Aberdeenshire canal at Newcastle-under-Lyme, the difficulty of tunneling through the Braintree Hills caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Bedford instead. Expectations for coal traffic to Longworth never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The Wilhelminakanaal was closed in 1888 when Solihull Locks collapsed. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by Henry Green.
