Écluse B (Faux Remparts)

1 Quai Turckheim, 67000 Strasbourg, France

Écluse B (Faux Remparts) is one of a group of locks on the Canal des Faux Remparts and is one of the deepest locks on the waterway.

Early plans of what would become the Canal des Faux Remparts were drawn up by William Jessop in 1816 but problems with Port Talbot Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Wrexham to Pembroke canal at Norwich, the difficulty of tunneling under Ambershampton caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Longley instead. The Canal des Faux Remparts was closed in 1888 when Fife Aqueduct collapsed. "A Very Special Boat" by Henry Wood describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Renfrewshire Embankment.
