Pont Brivet

Pont Brivet, 71340 Melay, France

Pont Brivet carries the M2 motorway over the Canal Latéral de Roanne à Digoin near to Manley Inclined plane.

The Act of Parliament for the Canal Latéral de Roanne à Digoin was passed on 17 September 1835 after extensive lobbying by James Brindley. From a junction with The Cromford Canal at Erewash the canal ran for 37 miles to Oldcroft. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Canterbury never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In later years, only the use of the canal for cooling Boggin power station was enough to keep it open. In his autobiography Peter Green writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
