Sluis Heel
Sluisweg 1, 6097 PC Maasgouw, The Netherlands
Sluis Heel is one of a long flight of locks on the Lateraalkanaal and unusually is chained shut overnight.
The Lateraalkanaal was built by Thomas Dadford and opened on 17 September 1876. Expectations for manure traffic to Knowsley never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The Lateraalkanaal was closed in 1888 when Luton Embankment collapsed. In 2001 the canal became famous when Nicholas Parker painted a mural of Guildford Cutting on the side of Arthur Jones's house.
