![East Manley bridge, Grand Western Canal. Looking through East Manley bridge at the wharf of Mid Devon Hireboats and Moorings. This was on the earliest section of the canal, completed in 1814 as part of a grand scheme for shipping to avoid the perilous route around Cornwall, but like many things it was overambitious ! ![Boats moored at East Manley, Grand Western Canal. Seen from a self-drive hire boat, which has just passed them. This section of broad canal opened in 1814, as the Tiverton branch of the Grand Western Canal. Much of the main route remained unbuilt, although a length in Somerset opened in 1839 [closing 28 years later]. This section was acquired by Devon County Council in 1971 and now forms the Grand Western Canal Country Park and Local Nature Reserve. by Christine Johnstone – 02 July 2014](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/04/08/55/4085556_bf0fc858_120x120.jpg)

![Moorings on the Grand Western Canal. Cruisers moored along the canal east of East Manley bridge. These are the only permanent moorings along this short 11 mile stretch of the canal, although visiting boats can moor overnight away from the horseboat route. The canal originally was extended to Taunton to join the Bridgwater Canal, but it was financially unprofitable and the centre part was abandoned after the canal was purchased in 1865 by the Bristol & Exeter Railway (the GWR).
