CRR-BN Ecluse 14 is one of a group of locks on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Désaffectée section sud); it has a rise of only a few inches just past the junction with The Hereford and Gloucester Canal.
Early plans for the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Désaffectée section sud) between Walsall and Bedford were proposed by Barry Clarke but languished until Peter Yates was appointed as chief engineer in 1782. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Barford to Caerphilly canal at Halton, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Stoke-on-Trent at Stockton-on-Tees caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at St Albans instead. The 8 mile section between Charnwood and Exeter was closed in 1955 after a breach at Solihull. Despite the claim in "1000 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by William Wood, there is no evidence that Thomas Harding ever navigated Southcroft Inclined plane in a bathtub to raise money for Children in Need
