Salter's Lode Lock

The Lane, Salters Lode PE38 0BD, United Kingdom

Information about the place
Salter's Lode Lock is a place on the waterways on the Middle Level Navigations (Well Creek) between Outwell - Lance Hunter Rowe Boat Basin (Junction of Old River Nene with Well Creek) (5 miles and 3 furlongs to the west) and Salter's Lode Junction (Junction of Well Creek with the River Great Ouse) (¼ furlongs to the east).

The nearest place in the direction of Outwell - Lance Hunter Rowe Boat Basin is Salter's Lode Lock Field Bridge; 1 furlong away.

There may be access to the towpath here.

Mooring here is tolerable (it's just about possible if really necessary), mooring rings or bollards are available. River side, there is space for one boat (arrange with lock-keepers). Middle Level side there are good holding moorings, total of about 150 ft.

There is a bridge here which takes a minor road over the canal.

This is a lock with a rise of tidal.

Additional information

Salters Lode Lock is a bit tricky to enter from the river. The turn in has to be made early, even then there is a risk of colliding with the lower entrance wall, fortunately it is (was) lined with tyres. If it looks like the turn in isn't going to be achieved it's best to allow the boat to go downstream then turn around and come in against the flow, which I've done, and it's somewhat easier than the above. The lock keepers will give plenty of advice.

There are also low beams over the lock entrance on the tidal side, which may provide even less headroom than the Middle Level Link route until tide drops.

Navigational Notes

Being tidal, Salter's Lode operates at certain times. When tides are very low there may be days it cannot be used - call the lock-keeper.

Tricky to enter from the river, see additional note. From Upwell through Well Creek, waters are narrow and shallow. Allow extra time (2.5 mph average?) to meet your tide schedule.
