![Narrow boats 'Yeoford' & 'Mendip' moored at Norbury Junction, Shropshire Union Canal (1). Breaking their journeys are unloaded 'Yeoford' and butty (Birmingham & Midland Canal Carrying Company) and loaded 'Mendip' (Anderton CCC) with their crews. Leaning on 'Mendips' tiller is 'Chocolate Charlie' Atkins, a well-known boatman who lived aboard 'Mendip' for many years. He gained the nickname because a regular trip for him (and 'Mendip') was transporting chocolate crumb from Cadbury's factory at Knighton, on the Shropshire Union Canal near Market Drayton, to their factory at Bournville on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. He managed 2 trips/week until the trade ended in 1961. This traffic is recorded on a plaque at Knighton: [[547848]]. by Martin Tester – 14 June 1970](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/07/78/90/7789059_6a2a8c56_120x120.jpg)

![Narrow boat 'Mendip' arrives at Norbury Junction, Shropshire Union Canal, 1970. 'Mendip' with boatman 'Chocolate Charlie' Atkins at the helm has just arrived in the basin and drifts past 'Yeoford', ([[7788994]]). He will moor stern-to-stern. I had seen 'Mendip' being loaded with concrete slabs at BWB's yard in Northwich the previous morning, [[7785441]]; to see her arrive at Norbury Junction was a surprise! by Martin Tester – 14 June 1970](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/07/78/90/7789056_0acb1d44_120x120.jpg)
