The mainline [Bascote Locks] of which is called Radford Bottom Lock, and is close to where the route as built left the planned route to Braunston. Two more locks raised the level again [Coventry Canal] Oxford company to shorten its route north of Braunston, and because Grand Junction traffic using the Braunston–Fazeley route avoided the high tolls charged [Canal pound] Union Canal, between Cosgrove Lock, which starts the ascent to the Braunston summit to the north, and Fenny Stratford lock, which starts the ascent to the [Hawkesbury Junction] scheme reduced the distance to Braunston from 36 miles (58 km) to 22 miles (35 km).
