On the River Nene most locks have this arrangement as in time of flood the top mitre gates [East Midlands] and in the Lincolnshire Wolds.[citation needed] The region's major rivers, the Nene, the Soar, the Trent, and the Welland, flow in a northeasterly direction [Ely, Cambridgeshire] 85 feet (26 m), is the highest land in the Fens. Major rivers including the Witham, Welland, Nene and Great Ouse feed into the Fens and, until draining [Nether Heyford] reference to it in local deeds. The village is on the flood plain of the River Nene and used to be subjected to flooding, as Watery Lane suggests. In 1699 [Wymondham to Wells Branch] it joined a DMU special from Sheringham before continuing together to the Nene Valley Railway. 200 passengers travelled on this special. The final train [Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Railway] extended from Grassmoor Junction at the north end, but in 1929 when the new Up Yard opened, it was extended northwards and Twenty Foot River became the northern [Mid-Norfolk Railway] over the line.
