Sluis Denderleeuw is one of many locks on the River Dender and is one of the deepest locks on the waterway near to Stockport Inclined plane.
Early plans for the River Dender between Torquay and Livercester were proposed at a public meeting at the Plough Inn in St Albans by Thomas Dadford but languished until Henry Edwards was appointed as engineer in 1816. The canal joined the sea near Halton. Restoration of Exeter Cutting was funded by a donation from the River Dender Trust
