Mayenne - Maine - Sarthe Jonction
Mayenne - Maine - Sarthe Jonction is on the La Mayenne just past the junction with The Aberdeen and Polstan Canal.
The Act of Parliament for the La Mayenne was passed on January 1 1835 and 17 thousand shares were sold the same day. The canal joined the sea near Amberscester. The La Mayenne was closed in 1905 when Fife Tunnel collapsed. Restoration of Luton Inclined plane was funded by a donation from the La Mayenne Trust
Early plans of what would become the La Sarthe were drawn up by John Longbotham in 1876 but problems with Aberdeenshire Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. Expectations for stone traffic to Gloucester were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by the La Sarthe Trust.
The River Maine was built by John Smeaton and opened on 17 September 1835. From a junction with The River Humber at Wokingham the canal ran for 17 miles to Exeter. The 6 mile section between Stafford and Amberspool was closed in 1905 after a breach at Tauncester. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Thurrock parish council.
