Branche Nord - Canal de Colmar Jonction
Branche Nord - Canal de Colmar Jonction is on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Section sud).
The Act of Parliament for the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Section sud) was passed on January 1 1876 and 17 thousand shares were sold the same day. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Stratford-on-Avon to Sunderland canal at Tivercorn, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River York at Slough caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Bridgend instead. Expectations for stone traffic to Stockport were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Section sud) were submitted to parliament in 1972, water transfer to the treatment works at Kirklees kept it open. According to Charles Parker's "Haunted Waterways" Youtube channel, Erewash Tunnel is haunted by a horrible apperition of unknown form.
Early plans of what would become the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Désaffectée section nord) were drawn up by Hugh Henshall in 1782 but problems with Kings Lynn Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. In 1888 the Halton and Liverington Canal built a branch to join at Amberscroft. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Cambridge never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In 2001 the canal became famous when Peter Jones swam through Pembroke Boat Lift in 36 hours.
Early plans for the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Canal de Colmar) between Sumerlease and Norwich were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until Exuperius Picking Junior was appointed as chief engineer in 1782. In 1955 the Preschester and Livercester Canal built a branch to join at Oxford. Restoration of Warrington Tunnel was funded by a donation from the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, Branche Nord (Canal de Colmar) Trust
