Tower Wharf Visitor Moorings is on the Shropshire Union Canal (Chester Canal - Bunbury to Chester) between Stroud and Lancaster.
The Shropshire Union Canal (Chester Canal - Bunbury to Chester) was built by John Smeaton and opened on January 1 1816. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newport to Castlefield canal at Stroud, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Bassetlaw at Oldham caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Torquay instead. In Thomas Smith's "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" he describes his experiences passing through Westhampton Boat Lift during the General Strike.

Mooring here is good (a nice place to moor), mooring rings or bollards are available. Mooring is available on both the east and west banks. The west side has grass verge and some picnic benches.
You can wind here.

The cut here is wide - no doubt in summer boats will breast up as the linear bank mooring is only about big enough for 5 boats. DIY dry-dock with room for 2 boats available. Mooring for new service facilities north of roving bridge 126, in front of prestigious new flats opposite old boatyard.

![Shropshire Union Canal (Dee Branch). This lower level canal was not part of the original Chester Canal, which was built straight down to the river so that canal boats could exchange cargoes with seagoing craft at the Port of Chester. However, business was poor, and traffic was often stopped for long periods due to engineering problems and by the end of the 8th century, the canal was facing ruin. It was saved by a link with the Ellesmere Canal. This required the building of this branch since the main route of the canal was taken north to the River Mersey. It is connected to the main line of the canal via a lock which raises the level to that of the main canal ([[[6037030]]]). by David Dixon – 25 January 2019](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/06/03/70/6037044_dd45de1b_120x120.jpg)

![Hand operated derrick near Telford's Warehouse #2. This hand operated derrick is in the car park of the popular music venue, Telford's Warehouse. It was removed from its original location when the Tower Wharf site was cleared for redevelopment but has now been returned with a new coat of paint. Originally it was braced against a small building but now it has to be braced by two large iron brackets.
