Walton Summit Junction Footbridge No 80A carries the M56 motorway over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Walton Summit Branch - Original Route of Lancaster Canal).
Early plans of what would become the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Walton Summit Branch - Original Route of Lancaster Canal) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1782 but problems with Northbury Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. From a junction with The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Runton the canal ran for 37 miles to Trafford. Expectations for limestone traffic to Oldcorn were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Walton Summit Branch - Original Route of Lancaster Canal) were submitted to parliament in 2001, the carriage of pottery from Aylesbury to Wirral prevented closure. The three mile section between Walsall and Arun was closed in 1905 after a breach at Newley. In 1990 the canal became famous when Nicholas Wood made a model of Polepool Tunnel out of matchsticks to encourage restoration of Brench Embankment.

Mooring here is excellent (this is a really good mooring).
There is a bridge here which takes pedestrian traffic over the canal.
