![T for Tame and junction - Spaghetti Junction, Birmingham. To the north-west Junction 6 of the M6 the famed Spaghetti Junction, to the south-east the junction with the Grand Union Canal and here the junction of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal with the Tame Valley Canal. The go-ahead for the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal was given in 1784 after considerable opposition from the Birmingham Canal Company to provide a link between Birmingham and the south-east of England. The engineer was John Smeaton - the work was finished in 1789. The Tame Valley Canal, opened in 1844, ran from here at Salford Junction to Doebank Junction [[SO9793]] a distance of 8.5 miles. Spaghetti Junction was built between 1968 - 72 and it is said that flyover pillars over canals had to be modified to avoid fouling tow ropes (Wikipedia).
