This bridge is No. 71 under the original Ellesmere Canal
numbering, used today on both the Hurleston to Frankton Junction line
(later renamed as part of the Llangollen Canal) and the Frankton
Junction to Llanymynech line (later designated as part of the
Montgomery Canal).
As is common elsewhere, the bridge over
the branch line (Rowson’s) to Trevor, was included in the numbering
sequence as No. 70. The numbering of the Trevor line, which opened
several years later, adopted a second numbering sequence, with a
‘W’ suffix added later to differentiate it from the original main
line. This resulted in Rowson’s being numbered both 70 and 1(W).
By 2015, Lockgate Bridge had acquired a number plate showing
’70’, despite this being in contradiction with published guides,
articles and on-line canal descriptions / restoration archives. It is
not yet clear whether this was an inadvertent error or a conscious
decision based on the redundancy of 70 for Rowson's. Whatever the
cause, it seems unfortunate to lose the historical number associated
with this Grade II listed bridge.
