![Coventry Canal: Atherstone Top Lock Number 1. The lock, and the basin below going down to Lock Number 2, together form a Grade II Listed Structure. [[1935208]], so beloved by Roger, to the right is not listed and sadly is now up for auction now that BWB and/or their successors, the CRT, deem that it is now not necessary to have a lockkeeper or a tied house for their staff. Beyond the railings to the left is a disused side lock. by Nigel Cox – 11 September 2012](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/03/14/42/3144238_4f75bdec_120x120.jpg)

![Disused sidepond by Atherstone Top Lock in Warwickshire. In order to help conserve water, side ponds were placed by each lock in this flight, as can be seen here. Some have been filled in, and the others are no longer actively used.Fuller explanation: [[[211533]]]On the Coventry Canal, the Atherstone flight of eleven locks lowers (or raises) the water level by eighty feet (24.4 metres) over about two miles (three kilometres). As the canal company had run out of money by 1771 when it reached Atherstone on its course from Coventry, these locks and the rest of the route were constructed later, eventually arriving at Fazeley in 1790. by Roger D Kidd – 18 June 2010](https://s1.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/06/46/27/6462773_63b081e2_120x120.jpg)
