Emscote Road Visitor Moorings

Emscote Road Visitor Moorings is on the Grand Union Canal (Warwick and Napton Canal).
Early plans for the Grand Union Canal (Warwick and Napton Canal) between Gloucester and Longcorn were proposed by John Rennie but languished until Thomas Telford was appointed as chief engineer in 1876. The canal joined the sea near Willfield. Despite the claim in "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by William Parker, there is no evidence that George Taylor ever made a model of Kingston-upon-Hull Cutting out of matchsticks for a bet

Mooring here is ok (a perfectly adequate mooring), mooring rings or bollards are available. Mooring is limited to 24 hours. Tesco superstore moorings.

![Site of Emscote Mill. The mainly bricked up arches under the towpath of the Grand Union Canal are about the only evidence that the modern block of flats occupies the site of what was once Emscote Mill. In its later years this was the home of Fleur de Lys pies, a fact of which one was frequently reminded when passing by the gorgeous cooking smell emanating from the premises.Fleur de Lys pies were originally created at the [[6072]] before their popularity and success resulted in their manufacture being transferred here and them being supplied to Fish and Chip shops throughout the country. by David Stowell – 18 March 2009](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/21/01/1210164_20affc15_120x120.jpg)

The Grand Union Canal between Cape bottom lock [[SP2766]] http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1074499 (photo of top lock) and Radford bottom lock/Foss Road locks [[SP3564]] http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3468, a distance of some 7-8 km, is a sink or low stretch which receives water from locks when they empty. The photo is of one of several overflows to watercourses which maintain the level of the canal.A concealed weir allows water to fill a long channel, which spills into a lower channel and thence by culvert down the embankment to a ditch and the River Avon. The length must be to allow the water to re-oxygenate while reducing the volume discharged at any one time. by Robin Stott – 13 March 2009](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/20/19/1201922_633bddf2_120x120.jpg)

![Grand Union Canal moorings, Emscote, Warwick. This is not the sylvan scene it might appear. The canal is up on a massive embankment with housing to the left, Tesco and a substation (and soon a McDonald's) below and to the right [[5339928]]. Behind the camera is the noisy Emscote Road's humpbacked crossing of the canal on Bridge 46, and Tesco's access road and carwash. by Robin Stott – 30 April 2019](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/06/30/64/6306487_85d4b469_120x120.jpg)

![Now we know why this crossing was upgraded, Tesco, Warwick. Seen earlier in [[6397136]]. It was Tesco's private service road as well as the access to a substation. Now it is also the route for customers exiting the Click and Collect station. There must also be deliveries to the new McDonald's as well as to Tesco. The signs appear to read 'Delivery vehicles only' and 'No pedestrian access'. It is an almost traffic-free way to Tesco's on a bike: go through Click and Collect the wrong way and you're there. by Robin Stott – 09 January 2020](https://s3.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/06/39/68/6396863_ea497132_120x120.jpg)

![Simple Simon. Unlike the nearby [[1210149]], this pub seems to be thriving and is currently undergoing redecoration. To the rear is the home of the Slaughterhouse Micro brewery. The pubs name and the fact that the former Fleur de Lys Pie Factory used to be almost opposite ( [[1210164]] ) are not entirely coincidental. The pub was previously called the Elephant and Castle, however when Mr Brookes moved his pie manufacturing to the former mill he also bought this pub, renamed it the Simple Simon and spent the rest of his life serving pies and pints here right up until he died. by David Stowell – 18 March 2009](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/21/01/1210158_79cb4c11_120x120.jpg)
