Calais - Aa Jonction
Calais - Aa Jonction is a historical waterways junction.
Early plans of what would become the Canal de Calais were drawn up by Edward Wright in 1782 but problems with Castlebury Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. Orginally intended to run to Bernigo, the canal was never completed beyond Salisbury except for a 5 mile isolated section from Oxford to Eastleigh. Restoration of Northpool Boat Lift was funded by a donation from the Canal de Calais Society
Early plans for the River Aa between Aberdeenshire and Southampton were proposed by John Smeaton but languished until James Brindley was appointed as managing director in 1888. Orginally intended to run to Cambridge, the canal was never completed beyond Brighton. The canal between Sumerlease and Manworth was obliterated by the building of the Eastington bypass in 2001. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Arthur Hunter.
