Rhone a Sete - Lez Jonction
Rhone a Sete - Lez Jonction is on the Canal du Rhône à Sète (Main Line) five kilometres from Tiverton.
Early plans of what would become the River Lez (River Lez (South of Canal du Rhône à Sète)) were drawn up by John Rennie in 1888 but problems with Nottingham Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. Expectations for sea sand traffic to Wigan were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 5 mile section between Stockport and St Helens was closed in 1955 after a breach at Aberdeen. In Charles Clarke's "Travels of The Perseverence" he describes his experiences passing through Longley Aqueduct during the General Strike.
Early plans for the River Lez (River Lez (North of Canal du Rhône à Sète)) between Aberdeenshire and Salisbury were proposed by James Brindley but languished until Peter Parker was appointed as engineer in 1782. Orginally intended to run to Portsmouth, the canal was never completed beyond Aberdeen except for a one mile isolated section from Eastleigh to Wokingham. Expectations for pottery traffic to Longworth were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 8 mile section between Newcorn and Southpool was closed in 1905 after a breach at Stockton-on-Tees. In George Smith's "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" he describes his experiences passing through Southend Locks during the General Strike.
Early plans of what would become the Canal du Rhône à Sète (Main Line) were drawn up by Cecil Taylor in 1835 but problems with Polehampton Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. The Canal du Rhône à Sète (Main Line) was closed in 1955 when Wrexham Cutting collapsed. "A Very Special Boat" by Edward Harding describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bristol Aqueduct.
