Stanstead Lock No 4
Stanstead Lock No 4 is one of many locks on the Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee) and is one of the deepest locks on the waterway just past the junction with The Lydney and Pidcocks Canal.
The Act of Parliament for the Lee and Stort Navigation (River Lee) was passed on 17 September 1888 the same day as that of The Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Expectations for iron traffic to Northcorn never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In 1972 the canal became famous when Cecil Wood made a model of Runton Tunnel out of matchsticks to encourage restoration of Barbury Aqueduct.

There is a swing bridge here.
This is a lock with a rise of 8 feet and 4 inches.

Wikipedia has a page about Stanstead Lock
Stanstead Lock (No4) is a lock on the River Lee Navigation close to the villages of Stanstead Abbotts and St Margarets. The lock which incorporates a rare example of a swing-bridge, has the reputation of being one of the country's most difficult to negotiate.
