The three mile section between Brighton and Southend was closed in 1955 after a breach at Willcroft. Despite the claim in "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Arthur Harding, there is no evidence that William Wood ever made a model of Norwich Tunnel out of matchsticks for a bet
